Refurbishing Dazor Lamps (In Progress)

Created: September 21, 2026

Background

I’ve been in the market for a lamp to hang over my workbench when I ran across a listing for multiple Dazor lamps. These lamps have a “floating arm” that allows you to position them however you want, making it ideal for a workspace. They also have an industrial look, which I personally like. The price didn’t seem too bad so I contacted the individual and snagged three of them (two for me and one for a present). Two of them were brown and the third is sort of a bronze finish. The ad also mentioned that these lamps were originally made in St. Louis, MO making them more enticing for me.

Plan

I figured refurbishing these lamps would make a neat addition for my workspace. Electrically I plan on replacing the fluorescent tubes with LEDs and removing the old ballasts and other electronics. Moving towards LED bulbs would require me to get rid of the momentary switch and replace it with off/on push buttons. I will probably just wire a pushbutton switch to mains and use ballast bypass LED tubes. There are some LED tubes available here on Amazon that look promising. Mechanically I want to teard them down to get sand blasted and powder coated.

Disassembly

All of the electronics (besides the momentary switch) are stored in the base of the unit along with a weight. The wires then snake up the arm and go to the momentary switch and tombstones. The bottom plate of the base comes off with two screws. The momentary switch is held in place with a nut.

Refurbishment

So far I have only disassembled one of the lamps and it is currently getting powder coated. The powder paint comes from Prismatic Powders. I plan on using “Oil Rubbed Bronze” for with two of the lamps and “Gold Rush” for the other. Prismatic Powders have a ton of different colors and textures available. The sample kits are nice to see what the paint looks like in person. Once they are powder coated then a glossy clear coat will be applied to help make the color pop. Here are some sample pictures of the base in both “Gold Rush” and “Oil Rubbed Bronze”:

I have not made a ton of progress electrically. I ordered a couple of off/on pushbutton switches from DigiKey, but they feel pretty cheap. I went with these because they’re supposed to fit a 12mm panel hole and aren’t very deep, which should prevent it from interfering with the white channel reflector. The current thought is to have a hot and neutral wire running from the off/on switch in the top of the lamp down to the base. From there I will connect these two conductors to the mains cord coming into the base using wire nuts. This should simplify the electrical quite a bit.

Future Work

Once the first lamp is done getting powder coated then I will go ahead and handle the wiring. Once I’m happy with the results then I will teardown the other two lamps and have them refinished as well.
